MICHELLE ST. JOHN'S STORY of OSINILSHATIN

The soundtrack includes OSINILSHATIN, the song written and performed by Michelle St. John and Jennifer Kreisberg that plays over the end credits. Here Michelle St. John tells the story behind this song:

It all went down like this... one day I received a draft of the Fancydancing script in the mail. I read it, and at the end it said, "Agnes stands and sings."

I thought, "Hmmm... interesting."

About a week later, I got another draft. I read it, and at the end it said, "Agnes stands and sings."

I thought, "Hmmm... still interesting."

I e-mailed Sherman and asked, "Hey, what song am I singing at the end?" A couple of days later, I received a reply, "I just figured you'd write it."

"AAAHHHH!!!!!" I thought. I've never written a song for a film... I tried not to panic, and called ULALI diva (and one of my best friends) Jennifer Kreisberg and explained the situation. I asked for her help with a melody, once I came up with some lyrics. We threw some ideas around and I wrote two songs in English, but they just didn't work for me and I couldn't figure out why.

One day, on my way to the gym, I slammed on the breaks and stopped dead in the middle of Dovercourt Road. "Ooohhhhh, the song needs to be in the language!!!!!" I yelled at the top of my lungs.

I pulled the car over, called Jennifer and explained this revelation. She said, "Oh, ya, of course, makes sense to me!" Later that night, I spoke with Sherman and shared this with him. He thought it was a great idea and put me in touch with his mother, who speaks Spokane fluently. I made a telephone appointment with Lillian Alexie and sat down with my two English songs ready to dictate. I realized that both songs were very wordy, poetic and would be too much for a translation. The poetry is in the language so the simpler the phrases, the better and it would also be easier to sing. So 10 minutes before my phone meeting with Lillian, I re-wrote the song.

I admit I was terrified. What if it didn't work? What if I missed the boat? What if Sherman hated it? Should I have a back-up? Well, I had no choice. I dictated the three verses to Lillian and waited for her e-mailed translation, accompanied by a tape of her speaking the words. I spent hours, literally hours trying to wrap my ear and mouth around the words in Spokane.

Once I did, I called Lillian for her approval and called Jennifer to create a melody. Of course Jen came up with something brilliant within moments. While I tried to make the verses fit, she came up with the vocables. We hoped it was good. We hoped it made sense and all the while, Sherman said: "I don't want to hear it. Surprise me; I trust you."

So the first time anyone heard the song was on the second to last day of filming, Sherman yelled, "Action." I stood up during the scene and started singing...

Who are you when you turn your back?
Where do you go when you leave here?
You can't hide from your truth
Can't run from where you belong

Some things you can't choose
Sometimes you can't have it all
I know your dreams remind you
Where you belong

Memories hold you tight
When there's no comfort in white arms
Loneliness will bring you back
Where you belong
