So NPR ran an online reader's survey to determine the Top 100 Teen Books and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian finished 31st, between Tuck Everlasting and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

.

So, yeah, I just applauded myself, but also the other 99 books on the list. The list is weighted toward bestselling and recent books (of which mine is both) and also toward those writers with big Internet presences.

John Green has five books on the list. I love the dude. Check out his incredible website.

Green's placement on the list has a lot to do with his incredible web skills. Green is a prime example of a 21st century writer, equally good on the page and on the Internet and in person. Aspiring writers can learn a lot from his example. Good for him. I look forward to reading everything the man writes. He's awesome.

And, hey, 57 of the books on the list were written or co-written by women. No list of Top 100 Books in any other genre would have included this many female authors. Cool.

My students can't wait for our reading time! I have watched them cry, laugh, and feel such empathy for Arnold, his family, and his friends. They love the book and don't want to put it away. They "feel" reading in a brand new and wonderful way! For most of them, this is a first! They are continuation high school seniors who have fallen in love with reading. Thank you! Karen W

In 13 years of teaching middle school, this is one of the few books that the young men in my class have ever fought over! Couldn't keep enough copies in the class.

with all due respect to everyone, when I have parents send me students who hate reading (all too often boys!), I hand them The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and that seals the deal. I have had to replace my copy of that book more times than I can count since the borrowers claim they THOUGHT they returned it as they rifle my bookcase for more Alexie. Two absconded with my SIGNED ALEXIE BOOKS (I will be at the U Bookstore to replace them). Absolutely true and absolutely why the diary is first on my list. It creates book readers. I could not ask for anything more.

As a native female writer, these books create common ground among my family who've never understood why i decided to earn an English degree. I love your books, it gives me something to laugh over... not that i don't love Vine Deloria Jr., it's just good to laugh and somehow still feel sad.

I am happy to report that this is the most ripped-off book from my classroom bookshelf. Students pass it around like porn! Love the book. Love Sherman Alexie! We adopted it a few years ago at our school, and some students say it is the only book they have ever read. Let's hope it reads them to more books!

I have taught Part-Time Indian and regularly supplement my teaching with short pieces sent via email through the Falls Apart mailing list. Good stuff! Sophomores enjoy it. Unfortunately, my 2nd grader tried to sneak Part-Time Indian to school to read when bored in class! Yikes! Why did it have to be that good?!?! I love how the book transcends age ranges.

I have been forced - I mean required - to read three of Sherman's books for my major in First Nations Studies at UW Green Bay. Fortunately, I love all of them! I've used much information from his books for my writing assignments in my major and my minor in English. Thank you Sherman for bringing laughter to my college career!

The NPR lists do show it as "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian". This spring I had the honor of grading thousands of middle school essays on an excerpt from the book. The state-wide standardized test had the students discuss "how the narrator's feelings changed" over the course of the basketball game-- when Arnold beats Rowdy... sadly, many kids (and I think many of the other adults grading) didn't fully appreciate it (or even understand it). I am glad to have graded it though, I sought out this site because of it. :)

Met a teacher on the DC to NYC bus, she teaches remedial reading in 9th grade and I was curious as to what they liked. She told me she had to get the graphic novel version of Fahrenheit 451 and that went over big. But the book they loooovvvved (drumroll please)... The Absolute True Diary ...Big congrats that is a meaningful audience, good books, they read and their life is changed. Very Cool.

TWILIGHT #27? ugh. I'd put FLIGHT up there in the top ten, for sure...definitely before Cather in the Rye (is that book really STILL on the list...really?)

I never considered Tonto and the Lone Ranger to be teen literature. Although I did first read an excerpt from it in school as a teen.

Now that's an accomplishment! Congratulations for you--and thank you for writing texts that are accessible and relevant to teenagers! Your one-of-a-kind writing style is a staple for instruction in my English classroom :)

I thought it was The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian? I just finished it, my 15-year-old son recommended it. I loved Arnold (Junior), he seemed so authentic, at least from my own experience with 15-year-old boys! Congrats to you and to all the authors, like E Hayes I also need to read and re-read many on this list . . .

Love this list--helpful in many respects, and even though I'm far from my "teen" years, it's full of books I want to read, some for the first time, some yet again

Yay--Nicely done! Really glad to see an increased recognition of women writers, too. I love the fact that we can comment now—thanks!
