From the pages of the New York Times is this interactive USA map of the 2010 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index:

There are stark differences among Southern and Northern states in all of the well-being categories. It's not exactly a Democrat-Republican thing, as red states like Montana, Wyoming and North Dakota are pretty damn happy. I wonder if average humidity levels and happiness are inversely proportional.

NE Florida without A/C is it's own level of hell. and the cause was a snake wrapped aroiund a fan.. I gave the nice man who fixed it a check and a book for his trouble. And Thanked God I did not have to unwrap the snake myself..

This reminds me of the HPI (Happy Planet Index, http://www.happyplanetindex.org/) which compares similar statistics by country. I think comparing the U.S. to other countries is interesting because it shows that our perception of ourselves as a "world leader" is often misguided. For example, Cuba has a better life expectancy than the U.S., Venezuela has a better "experienced well-being" than the U.S. and, of course, our ecological footprint is exceeded only by a few other countries.

Humidity is a good hypothesis, but I think population density, poverty, and southern (read: deep-fried) cooking are also causative factors. It's telling to look at a few specific locations. In spite of it's dense population, L.A. is Shangri La as long as you are not out after dark (I guess they didn't interview folks in Compton. If you live in Phoenix, your life is good. If you live on the Navajo reservation... not so much.

Well... I was originally from NoDak and it's true. They ARE pretty happy... unless of course the Vikings are losing, the winter season extends to 10 months instead of 9, the tractor stops working, the lefse is burnt, or... my favorite, the huge debate about whether or not to change the name of the beloved UND Fighting Sioux.
